Well done to all those amazing women who ran the Race For Life this weekend

You were all amazing - the contribution you all made to a great cause is fantastic. It was a pleasure to play music to you all.

Well done!

Music, lots of runners, pink and Cancer Research

So this weekend saw the first of my performances at the Race For Life events in London. This weekend it was two performances at Race For Life in Finsbury Park.

We (Gareth, Cazz and I) set off from Cornwall super early on the Friday morning so that we could make it to London in time for a 2PM rehearsal at The Grove Music Studios near White City. I like it there, it has a lot of history for me and it’s also where my producer Alan Bleay has his studio. Thankfully the Gods of traffic and roadworks were on our side and we made it there in time (accompanied by Cazz’s urge to appoint herself DJ of a selection of 80’s rock ballads) -  not so much luck for Nigel and Dawn (who come up from Sussex) who had to contend with the glories of the M25 for more hours than anyone would want to.

Anyhooo, we had a 4 hour rehearsal which went brilliantly. It is just so lovely to see the songs I wrote come to life in the hands of other musical and creative people - the positive energy that comes from that is just addictive. We worked really hard to get the songs as tight and seamless as possible. So many of the tracks i’ve written have a bit of a random groove so it’s good to work hard on locking everything in. This is Dawn and Nigel taking a break to eat a bun!

So then it was time to disperse to various parts of London. Eat food, drink a bit of wine and hit the sack ready for an early start then next morning.

Up at 6am! At this point my brain had trouble thinking of something to wear or at least matching items together and I had to laugh  later in the day when I established that I did infact look like a bargain bin in a curtain factory, when it was far too late to do anything about it!Anyway I digress ( I do that) - we piled the gear into the car and headed for Finsbury Park willing it not to rain.

On arrival we pondered how we might fit us all on a smaller than expected stage. However we discovered that we are infact a rather compact collection of musicians and managed to arrange ourselves comfortably amongst various instruments and cables. Job done! We had to wait till 9am to soundcheck in a park, to avoid a slightly random alarm call for the sleeping residents. None the less, the sound was checked and was bloomin good! Thanks to Brad and Joe of JAP Sound (spot the plug!).

Then it was time for everyone to arrive. Our set was in between some amazing dancers and the warm up so we were a musical sandwhich between glamourous twirls and the odd star jump which was brilliant.

Sundays show was also fantastic. There were thousands of people and it was like playing to a sea of pink from the stage.

On a serious note, to be able to provide music for thousands of women who were running to raise money for cancer research is very humbling. Whilst I was on stage I suddenly realised that on the back of each of the runners was not just a number but a name or two. All names of those who are battling or have battled with cancer. Each and every one of those names was loved and cherished by someone, and I had the chance to sing with everything I have in order to do them all justice. Music comes from the heart and at these shows it felt that anything less would be unacceptable. I consider that a wonderful way to share music.
